Books for Soldiers
Approximate 150,000 US troops have been deployed in the last seven years to fight in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. The main concern among all the soldiers in the field is their relationship with their partner back home. This is ranked HIGHER than being wounded or killed in service.
Donate this book to US soldiers worldwide to those
struggling with their relationships.
Numbers:
150,000 troops deployed
49,500 one third of all troops seek help regarding their relationship or marriage
3,602 Books donated through The Gottman Institute program
45,898 Books NEEDED
Statistics:
75% of army officer’s marriages are ending in Divorce
Last year 2,100 soldiers attempted suicide across the Army -- an average of more than 5 per day. This compares with about 350 suicide attempts in 2002, the year before the war in Iraq began, according to the Army.
The number one stressor related to the suicide attempts
was problems in the soldier’s intimate relationship.
In December 2007, Captain Christopher Atkins, started a “Long Distance Relationship Discussion Group” In Iraq using “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work” as the text. Reading and exercise assignments are sent via email to the respective spouses back home as well as the soldiers, so they can complete together and report back to the group on the progress made in their relationship enhancements. This program has been incorporated throughout the military and the books are being used around the world!
“Your book was the MOST COMPREHENSIVE research-based and incredibly
practical guide in tackling this epidemic of failing Army marriages
through not the "active listening" communication approach of PREP
which every Chaplain here uses in their programs, but through your
dynamic interventions to foster "emotionally intelligent couples",
EXACTLY what is needed for these young men and women.”
- Captain Chris Atkins
